First off, LOVED the book Salt and Silver and so want to read more with these characters! I had it in my to be read pile and in hind sight wish I had read it sooner.

I like the real life intimacies mentioned in books especially in this type of book. The demon killing gross stuff and down to earth tone allows for that part to fit perfectly.

I can't stand cigarette, cigar or pipe smoke but I get it as a descriptive in books and it doesn't bother me. The hero smoking is fine with me too. It's not like he's chain smoking and got a hacking cough that the heroine awakes to each morning. The scent descriptives in the book were pretty cool and did nothing but add to the atmosphere of this story.

Anyhow, great work ladies! I'm really looking forward to the next one:)

Sorry to sound "fighty," but between the Juan Williams fiasco and the Republicans attempting to pull federal funds from NPR I'm feeling pretty defensive about what I think is a national treasure. Doesn't mean they're above criticism, just that those of us who depend on it need to defend it when we can.

Peace.

Er... I don't think Kat was passing judgment on all of NPR (which she listens to for fun regularly, unlike myself). You're sounding pretty fighty, so I'm done, but I hope you enjoy the rest of our blog posts here, even though this one clearly rubbed you the wrong way.

Why not listen to a few other shows that interest you before passing judgement in sweeping generalizations. It would be like me reading your comment and because of something you say that I disagree with me saying that all bloggers are x. NPR has many shows, OnPoint has been around for ten years.

I doubt many people who consider themselves smart and hip would ever pass judgement on an entire radio network because of one hour of one show.

No one I think of when I think of people who are well read (and/or worldly) would ever claim that Shakespeare did not put dirty jokes into his work. That seems incredibly basic to me (and, clearly, to Kat as well, since she wrote this blog entry). I guess you have different criteria by which you judge this kind of thing!

Re your last comment, I direct you to Kat's last paragraph. I wouldn't personally call it harsh; having high standards when it comes to people who put themselves forth as knowledgeable or experts strikes me as wise.

Actually, Tom Ashbrook, the interviewer you're beating on is one of the best talk show interviewers on radio (along with Terry Gross). Dig around in his archives and listen to other shows and you'll see. He's quite well read, well travelled, and worldly.

I'm a huge fan of Apatow's movies and while I enjoyed pieces of the show, it wasn't all that great from my perspective either. But that's only one of Tom's shows out of many and onPoint is only one of the many great shows on NPR. To judge all of NPR programming by the fact that one interviewer on one show failed to cite what you thought he should cite seems a bit harsh.

Just tell the story the way YOU want it to be told. It is your story, You can trim and cut later. Your process is fine,
There are lots of writers who do therapy on paper.. I can name about a dozen. I quit reading them. I have my own angst, YOU and Kat just tell a fine story and I am glad you are slogging though and doing another. I really loved Salt and Silver.
